BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT ASBESTOS
Asbestos is a naturally fibrous mineral which has had many applications in the past such as resistance to high temperatures, high tensile strength and resistance to chemical attack. Most asbestos used has been chrysotile, or white asbestos. Other types include amosite, crocidolite, and tremolite asbestos fibers. Other types of asbestos fibers have been used in talc or chrysotile ore.
When inhaled, asbestos fibers lodge in the lung as well as other bodily organs and systems.
There are four main types of asbestos-related diseases. They are:
1. Malignant mesothelioma: This is a cancer of the lining of the lung. The majority of the medical community agrees this cancer is caused only by asbestos. There is no current cure for this disease, but new and exciting therapies are currently being developed and tested in the United States. If you have been given this diagnosis, we can direct you to medical specialists testing these new therapies and treatment options.
2. Lung cancer, as well as cancers of the GI tracts, esophagus and larynx. Asbestos has been linked to cancers of the lung itself. Many of these cancers, if caught early, are treatable. Even if you smoke or smoked, your exposure to asbestos increases your likelihood of developing lung cancer. If you are not under the care of an experienced oncologist, we may be able to direct you to medical professionals experienced with the treatment of asbestos-related cancers for treatment.
3. Asbestosis: This is a non-cancerous condition which is a scarring of the lung as a result of the inhalation of asbestos dust and fibers. Once an asbestos fiber is inhaled and trapped in the lung, it cannot be removed. The body reacts with the formation of scar tissue which can result in impairment of lung function, such as shortness of breath. There is no cure for this disease, which is also known as interstitial fibrosis.
4. Benign pleural disease: This is also known as pleural plaques, pleural fibrosis, pleural effusions, and pleural pseudotumors. While not a cancerous condition, this can result in impaired lung function.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ANY OF THESE DISEASES AND BELIEVE YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO ASBESTOS, PLEASE COMPLETE THE QUESTIONNAIRE REFERENCED BELOW. YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR COMPENSATION FOR YOUR INJURIES.
Please see our lists of trades, worksites,
and union affiliations which are known to be linked to asbestos use and exposure. This list is far from complete. If you have ever worked in insulation, HVAC, plumbing, welding, automobiles (especially with or around brake changes), railroads, roofing, boiler making, on any ships or submarines, Naval, Coast Guard or Merchant, near or in any boiler rooms in any building, carpentry, painting, laying of floor or ceiling tile or acoustical tile, copper refining, or any other trade where you even believe you may have been exposed to asbestos, you should complete the questionnaire referenced below.
Additionally, those vulnerable to asbestos-related diseases are not only those who worked with the products. Family members of people who worked with asbestos may have been exposed to asbestos fibers through a relatives' clothing or other belongings. This includes the wives and children of men who worked with asbestos.
