Paxil
Paxil is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced.
Paxil is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Paroxetine or paroxetine hydrochloride (sold under the trade names Paxil in the United States, Seroxat in the United Kingdom and China, Aropax in Australia and New Zealand, Deroxat in Switzerland) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type. It was released onto the market in 1992 by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline and has since become one of the most prescribed antidepressants on the market. It is the second most prescribed anti-depressant in the UK.
Major Side Effects
Paxil causes serious side effects: Paxil may cause painful withdrawal and addiction problems. Pregnant women taking Paxil have a greater chance of having babies with birth defects especially heart defects than women who have used other antidepressants or no antidepressants. Paxil has been recklessly prescribed to children when it was proven no more effective than a placebo. Both children and adults taking Paxil have demonstrated suicidal tendencies while taking Paxil and while trying to quit Paxil during withdrawal.
